PLANTA LUMINOSA

Ā Ā Ā The idea of this seriesĀ comes from my previous work called Axis Mundi in which I created long exposure images in different forests at night using a flashlightĀ to illuminateĀ trees and the ground.Ā
Ā  Ā As I progressed with the workĀ I thought that I would tryĀ this techniqueĀ in a completely darkened interior, but on a much smaller scale using plants as my subjects.
Ā  Ā While I wasĀ preparingĀ for the shootĀ a question came to my mind. What if the plants were constantly moving during the exposure? IĀ decided thatĀ they are going to move and I am going to rotate them around their vertical axes. So I picked up a nice long-stemmed plant and mountedĀ on a rotating table plate.Ā ForĀ the lighting I modified a small led torch in order to achieveĀ a more concentrated light so I was able to increase the length ofĀ exposure.Ā
Ā  Ā The result was aĀ bright,Ā blurry, ghostly, almost X-ray-like image.Ā After some experiments, I realizedĀ if I light the plants from both sides for the same amount of time, theirĀ shapeĀ turns into a relatively symmetrical structure in the imageĀ due to the continuous rotation.
Ā  Ā For me, this seriesĀ represents the movement of the universe, such as the swirl ofĀ galaxies, the orbiting motionĀ of stars and moons, the rotation of planets likeĀ Earth and the cycles of nature.Ā This universalĀ motionĀ is evoked by the meditative dance of the Dervishes. They are constantly whirlingĀ around themselves almost the whole ceremony. Through the imitation ofĀ celestial bodiesĀ they become involved in the eternal circulation of life, in which everything flows together.
